Dummies guide for Car Battery
Car battery is mostly one type of ort rechargeable battery that is designed to supply electrical
power to the automobile and vehicles. Car battery generally means the SLI battery which can power to do the
starting, lighting or ignition. Car battery powers the starter motor of the automobile,
lights and ignition systems to make the vehicle engine run. Car battery can also be called as a traction
battery that is used as a source of power for the electrical vehicle.
Car batterers which are usually made up of lead-acid provide 12 volt difference and connect six
galvanic cells in series. At a full charge each of the cell provides 2-1 volts that makes 12.6 volts at the total.
As told earlier the car batteries are mainly lead acid batteries. These mostly consist of lead and lead dioxide
plates. These plates are flooded into an electrolyte solution. The solution contains almost 65% of water and 35%
sulfuric acid. This makes a chemical reaction to take place which releases the electrons which allows them to flow
through the conductors to produce electricity. When the battery discharges the acid present in the electrolyte
reacts with the materials of the plates and changes them to lead sulfate. When the battery is recharged, once again
the chemical reaction is reversed and the lead sulfate changes itself to lead oxide and lead. The plates also
restored to the original condition produce the power capacity.
Car batteries are made slightly different from other types of batteries. The construction technique of
the car batteries depend much upon the application of the battery. The type of battery which is most in use today
is the flooded cell type battery that indicates the liquid electrolyte. The starting type of battery is the shallow
cycle type batteries that are specially designed to deliver large burst of energy. These are needed specially to
start the engine of the vehicle. These types of SLI batteries are designed in a special way because they are
intended to cover the large surface area to provide high electric current for short period of time. Once the car
has taken the start, the batteries are recharged by the inbuilt engine driven charging system.
Then there are deep cycle type batteries. These types of batteries are designed to produce large amount of power
for a long period of time. These are made for trolling motor, small boat, auxiliary power for special type of
vehicle and others. They are specially equipped to store the energy from the small wind turbine or from the photo
voltaic array. These contain thicker plates so that they can be safe under the higher number of charge and
discharge cycles. The energy range is almost 30-40 watt-hours per kilogram.
Car batteries that are specially designed to work for the starting, lighting and ignition are made to
deliver heavy current during a short period of time. They also have very small amount of discharge for each of the
use. They contain thin plates and thin separators between the plates. They have the specific gravity electrolyte so
that the internal resistance can be reduced.
